    • increase moment arm of quadriceps
    • fully engaged at 40 degree
    • Forces 3-5 x BW
  • Anatomy
    • thick cartilage (5 mm)
    • two facets (medial and lateral)
  • Stability
    • patella is restrained by
      • valgus axis of quadriceps mechanism (Q angle)
      • oblique fibers of vastus medialis and lateralis
      • patellofemoral ligament (MPFL)
        • medial patellofemoral ligament is the key restraint to lateral displacement
          • goes from medial border of patella to adductor tubercle
          • adherent to vastus medialis
