Our Philosophy
  • We believe the following methods are those most important for retained learning
    • the creative processing of information
      • the more ways the brain can learn to process and associate information, the more neural connections are made to that information. This allows for easier information recall, improved concept recognition and deep understanding.
    • the critical evaluation of other's work
      • critical evaluation is one of the best ways to force your brain to examine information from various perspectives. Similar to the creative process, such evaluation improves the understanding of the evaluated material. Furthermore, critical evaluation of other’s work can help improve the thought processes used during your own work.
    • open social interaction
      • Having a professional network in which ideas can be openly shared, communicated and refined allows for a continually improving product from which everyone can benefit. Orthobullets strives to maintain an environment in which all users and contributors can benefit from the work of others.
    • the repetition of information in similar and dissimilar formats
      • the more often the brain is exposed to material, especially in unique ways, the more neural connections are made to that material. It is these connections that allow for the information recall and pattern recognition that plays an integral part of learning and test taking.
    • the linking of didactic education with real life patient care
      • case studies allow information to be presented in story format. The brain is designed to remember information from stories much better than information presented in singular facts. Stories provide accompanying material that helps the brain create associations. These associations, when combined with didactic material, improve the understanding of material. Most lecturers who are considered excellent use stories and emotion to drive home points- this is not by accident or coincidence.
Copyright & Ethics
  • We are in the business of "meta-review"
    • that means we combine multiple review resources with an innovative format to create a novel product.
  • We are not in the business of plagerizing existing content
    • we are not in the business of "tweaking" existing questions or content
    • only by creating new content do you learn...so get creative and teach this stuff better than it has ever been taught before.
Your Job
  • As an author/editor of Orthobullets you contribute in the following ways
    1. writing questions
    2. reviewing questions written by other authors
    3. updating topics.
    4. reviewing topics
    5. reply to member comments
  • We have a “guidelines” on how to write content in order to make the process efficient for you while ensuring content is high-quality and high-yield for the users.
New Question Criteria - Brief
  • Whether you are writing questions, or reviewing questions, they should meet this 10 criteria:
    • C1: Tested concept (educational objective) from OITE or SAE is covered.
    • C2: Original approach to writing. Clearly different than original.
      • if the anwers options all look that same, then this is often a red flag that the question is not different enough
    • C3: Explanation Answer Paragraph 1 - State what answer is correct. (1 lines)
      • this just reiterates what answers is correct so members dont have to look back at the question.
    • C4: Explanation Tested Concept Summary
      • this summary paragraph focuses on the "tested concept" of the question. It is not meant to review the entire topic - our review topic pages serve that function.
      • You should go into a higher level of detail on the "tested concept" than appears in our topics. Thus, this is an an opportunity of vertical learning (deep) as opposed horizaontal learing (superficial review) like our topic.
      • It should only teach one "tested concept" per summary paragraph. If you try to teach to much, people forget everything. Teach one tested concept and keep the summary paragraph to 4-5 lines.
    • C5: Explanation Paragraph 3,4,5 Evidence summaries. This paragraphs are a quick review of the article. They need to be quick to read, and should not contain all the statistics. People dont need to know the number - they can go to the abstract for that. Thus they should be ~ four lines in view mode.
      • LINE 1 - state what they did (METHODS)
      • LINE 2 - state what they found (RESULTS)
      • LINE 3 - state what they conclude or recommned (CONCLUSION)
    • C6: Explanation Paragraph 6- Image paragraph describes Figures, Illustrations, and Videos
    • C7: Explanation Paragraph 7 - Explanation Incorrect Answers.
    • C8: "Tested Concept" added to appropriate topic and question icon link in topic works.
      • if a question appears on the OITE or SAE than that tested concept meets our inclusion criteria to be added to the topic. You dont need to add the level of detail seen in the tested concept summary paragraph of the question, just the basics.
    • C9: References in proper format, link to Pubmed, and LOE added
    • C10: Any useful Media (CVP) linked to question. (optional)
New Question Criteria - Detailed
  • C1: Education objective covered.
    • it is accepted that the OITE reflects what is on the boards. Therefore, we want our questions to reflect the "tested concepts" of the OITE. This is critical to make the content high yield, and give the residents the confidence that if they spend their time on this site they will be focusing on tested content.
  • C2: Original approach to writing.
    • We are not in the business of plagiarizing content. Do not copy or tweak questions. You learn best by taking a totally original and creative approach to writing questions. Therefore, stand back, understand the original question, and have fun. Some strategies are
      • flip the question
      • if you stick with clinical vignettes, make the vignettes different by adding images of studies
      • if you stick with clinical vignettes change the type of question between the following
        • What is the diagnosis?
        • What is the basic science behind it (genetics, molecular biology, physiology)?
        • How do you make the diagnosis? Evaluation?
        • What is the most appropriate treatment?
  • C3: Explanation Paragraph 1 - Explanation states diagnosis and answer. (2-3 lines)
    • Reinforce the answer through repetition. State what is the diagnosis and correct answer. Do not review the topic here.
      • "The clinical presenation is consistent with Chlamydial infection during pregnancy. The most appropriate first line of treatment is azithromycin for the pregnant mother AND sexual partner."
    • For "all of the following EXCEPT state all true answer, then incorrect"
      • "The clinical presentation is consistent with Paget's Disease. This condition is characterized by frontal bossing, back pain, viral etiology, and trabecular widening. Tibial bowing is not associated with Paget's disease, and is instead associated with neurofibromatosis."
  • C4: Explanation Paragraph 2 - Explanation Summary Paragraph.  (4-5 lines)
    • Explanation Tested Concept Summary
      • this summary focuses on the tested concept of the question. Foucs on reviewing that. Therefore, you should go into a higher level of detail on that one tested concept than appears in our topics. Our topics are high-level review. This paragraph is where you can go into a greater level of detail on the tested concept. Always identify the tested concept and write it down prior to writing question.
      • this paragraph does not serve as a high level review of the topic. Our topic serves that function.
  • C5: Explanation Paragraph 5,6,+ - Reference 2-liners.  (4 lines)
    • Summarize the cited references. We call them two liners.
      • The first line should give the objective findings. What were the results of the study. If it is a review paper, what objective medical information did they present. "Paget's is characterized by ....."
      • The second line should be the clinical implications. What do they recommend regarding treatment.
  • C6: Explanation Paragraph 5 - Image paragraph describes Figures, Illustrations, and Videos
    • Describe the Figures in the stem here.
    • Always start the paragraph with Figure A shows or Illustration A shows
      • Figures appear in the question stem while Illustrations appear in the explanation
  • C7: Explanation Paragraph 6 - Explanation Incorrect Answers. (optional but highly recommended)
    • You do not need this paragraph for all of the following EXCEPT questions
    • There are some questions where incorrect answers just dont make sense. In these questions they can be left out. Any question where they are valuable, they should be added.
  • C8: Educational objective added to appropriate topic and question icon link in topic works.
    • You must go to the topic and check
    • This is the most frequently forgotten criteria when people write and review. Don't forget to do this!
  • C9: References in proper format, link to Pubmed, and LOE added
    • adding the LOE is a pain in the neck, but it is critical for you to know what it is, and critical for us as we accumulate large amounts of evidence on which our questions and topics are based
  • C10: Educational Media is linked to the question.
    • We are adding a function where videos, posts, and cases, can be linked to questions. If you think there is any educational media directly related to the question, and it adds some additional learning
 Embedding Videos
  • Below are the requirements for video uploads to Orthobullets. As the site continues to grow it is imperative that standards are set and maintained to ensure quality. The below requirements are not all-inclusive but should provide guidance as you look for videos to upload to topics.

  • Required:
    • All videos must have audio
    • Resolution of videos must be at least 480ppi
    • No banner or pop-up adds should be embedded into the video
    • Professional standards should be met (i.e. if it is not a video you would include in a national
    • presentation, it should not be loaded to the orthobullets website)

  • Recommended
    • Videos should include orthopaedic surgeons whenever possible
    • The title of the video should be the same as the name/title that is referenced within the Orthobullets topic (i.e. O'Brien's test should not have a link to a video titled 'Active compression test')
    • Videos should be as specific as possible for the linked topic (i.e. it is not ideal to have to get five minutes into a video before the physical examination test or pathology is demonstrated)
