Biography

Dr. Paul T. Rubery is the Marjorie Strong Wehle Professor of Orthopaedics and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in scoliosis and spine surgery in both children and adults. Dr. Rubery has extensive experience with minimally invasive techniques, spinal trauma and tumors, as well as more complex reconstructive spinal surgery. Dr. Rubery has participated in research teams investigating a range of questions in Orthopaedics from gene therapy to patient based outcomes. Dr. Rubery received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. He completed fellowship training in spinal surgery at the University of Rochester. Dr. Rubery joined URMC's faculty in 1994 and led the Division of Spinal Surgery from 1999 – 2015. In 2000, he became Director of the URMC Spine Center, a multi-disciplinary clinical service treating nearly 25,000 patients with spine disorders each year. In 2007, Dr. Rubery was named the Department of Orthopaedics Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs. He became Acting Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in September 2014. As Acting Chair, he led the successful recruitment of surgeons specializing in trauma, total joint replacement, and hand surgery, as well as a sports medicine specialist. Dr. Rubery is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a member of many prestigious spine societies and has authored numerous journal articles. Dr. Rubery maintains his clinic, research, and teaching responsibilities in addition to his duties as chairman of the department.
