The radiograph demonstrates an AP of the right shoulder with evidence of severe degenerative arthritis, as well as proximal humeral head migration secondary to a rotator cuff tear. The reverse shoulder arthroplasty is useful for elderly patients with cuff tear-shoulder arthropathy who have failed to respond to conservative therapy, who have adequate bone support for firm anchorage of the glenoid component, and intact axillary nerve function. Drake et al. reviews the indications and short-term results. Goutallier stresses the importance of the rotator cuff in functional outcome following arthroplasty. The Sirveaux group describes the early French results in 80 shoulders with 96% of reporting no or only minimal pain and significant improvements in function and only 3 revisions. The indications for reverse have expanded to include certain proximal humerus fractures and malunions in elderly patients.
