Approximately forty-four million adolescents and 170 million adults in the United States participate in organized and recreational sports annually1 . Many sporting activities place participants at risk for brain injury including concussions. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated the annual sports-related concussion incidence to be between 1.6 and 3.8 million2 . As a result of the increasing incidence, many national initiatives, including the CDC’s ‘‘Heads Up’’ program (Table I), have been developed to raise concussion awareness among coaches, players, and parents.
