Flexor Digitorum Brevis

Video Description

This video demonstrates the action of the Flexor Digitorum Brevis on a cadaver.

ORIGIN:
The Flexor digitorum brevis primarily originates from the medial process of the tuberosity of the calcaneus. Some fibers also originate from the central part of the plantar aponeurosis and from the intermuscular septa. It is a part of the "first layer" of the plantar muscles of the foot.

COURSE:
It passes forward and divides into four tendons for digits 2-5 (not great toe). At the level of the bases of the first phalanges, each tendon divides into two slips (total 8) which deviate lateral and forms a central tunnel for the passage of the flexor digitorum longus.

INSERTION:
These branches of the flexor digitorum brevis then insert into the lateral surface of the MIDDLE phalanx.

ACTION:
Flexes toes 2-4

INNERVATION:
Medial Plantar Nerve

The flexor digitorum brevis is analogous to the flexor digitorum superficialis in the hand.
