Haglund syndrome is a common cause of hindfoot pain in adults, but it is still a poorly understood clinical condition. Conservative treatment is effective in most cases, and surgery is required only in intractable cases.
Enlargement of the bony part of the heel (where the Achilles tendon attaches) is the trigger for this condition. The soft tissue near the back of the heel can become irritated when the large, bony lump rubs against rigid shoes.
