Dr. Lane discusses the latest cartilage restoration procedure called MACI. Cartilage has no ability to heal on its own when it is injured. Many of the procedures used to treat cartilage injury are limited by the fact that they can only fill the defect with scar tissue rather than cartilage. With the MACI procedure, we can take your own cartilage cells, grow them in a lab, and then implant them into the injured area. The result is restoration of normal healthy cartilage without the risks of transplanting from another person. This video describes the treatment in a 16 year old football player with a catastrophic injury to his kneecap.
