Biography

Dr. McLawhorn specializes in adult reconstruction of the hip and knee, including complex primary and revision joint replacement surgery. He has particular expertise in robotic and computer-assisted joint replacement, direct anterior total hip replacement, partial knee replacement, hip resurfacing, and short-stay/rapid-recovery joint replacement. His practice is committed to providing personalized care to active patients who have disorders of the hip and knee. He holds regular office hours and provides surgical care in Manhattan and Stamford, CT. After attending college at Yale University, Dr. McLawhorn attended medical school at Columbia University. He then completed his residency at Hospital for Special Surgery, where he earned awards for excellence in orthopedic surgery and research. After residency, Dr. McLawhorn continued his training at HSS, completing an advanced fellowship in Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement and serving as the administrative Chief Fellow. Dr. McLawhorn believes that research, education, and leadership are central to the delivery of the highest quality, patient-centered, orthopedic care. He has authored numerous publications, earned multiple research awards and grants, and presented his research nationally and internationally. Dr. McLawhorn has particular interests in health care delivery, quality, safety, and value. Because of his passion for these issues, he has served as the Health Policy Fellow for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and related research earned him the prestigious Frank Stinchfield Award from the Hip Society. His current research is focused on projects that will help other surgeons enhance the value of arthritis care that they provide to their patients. Dr. McLawhorn's approach to caring for patients with disorders of the hip and knee involves personalized treatments, both operative and non-operative, that are supported by the latest evidence. He believes that shared decision-making with his patients is the best way to provide care that is individualized, compassionate, and most likely to achieve their goals.
