Dr. William R. Gallivan Jr. is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and joint replacement surgery. Born in Arrington, England, he is a fourth-generation surgeon. Dr. Gallivan earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1986. He completed a General Surgery internship at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in 1987, followed by an Orthopedic Surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident of the Total Joint Service. In 1992, he completed a fellowship in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine at the Institute for Bone and Joint Disorders in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Gallivan returned to Santa Barbara in 1992 to start his practice, focusing on advanced orthopedic surgical techniques, including computer-assisted and robotic-assisted surgeries. He is affiliated with multiple hospitals, including Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Gallivan enjoys spending time with his wife, Karen, an R.N., and their six children. His interests include rugby, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, martial arts, horseback riding, guitar, ukulele, and travel.
