Biography

Dr. Jose A. Canseco is a Harvard educated, Rothman fellowship trained spine surgeon, and an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Canseco specializes in the surgical management of degenerative spine conditions and traumatic spine injuries, as well as the treatment of complex pathologies of the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine. Dr. Canseco believes that the patient always comes first. He combines conservative surgical decision-making judgement with state-of-the-art and minimally invasive surgical techniques to promote improved patient outcomes. Dr. Canseco completed the combined curriculum at the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program, receiving an M.D. from Harvard Medical School and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He completed orthopaedic residency training at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by the 2-year clinical spine surgery-spine research fellowship here at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute. Dr. Canseco serves as a principal investigator in the Laboratory for Translational Spine Science at Thomas Jefferson University, focusing on therapies that can be applied in the clinic and operating room. His research interests include the exploration of neurogenic inflammatory pathways to understand the molecular basis of disc degeneration and its relationship to back pain, as well as the enhancement of fusion constructs during spine surgical procedures. As a clinician-scientist, his goal is in developing innovative conservative management interventions for disc-related back pain based on currently available biologics for neurogenic pain syndromes. Dr. Canseco has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and regularly presents at national and international spine meetings. Dr. Canseco’s contributions have earned him various awards, including a Fellow Research Grant from the Cervical Spine Research Society. Most recently, Dr. Canseco was recognized by the North American Spine Society as a member of the 2021 SpineLine’s 20 Under 40 class.
