Biography

John R. Fowler, MD, is a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Temple University Hospital and a fellowship in hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery at UPMC. Dr. Fowler serves on multiple committees for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and the American Association of Hand Surgery (AAHS). He is a reviewer for the Journal of Hand Surgery and has published over 50 scientific articles. He was recently selected as a “Young Leader” by the ASSH, an honor given to only 15 hand surgeons per year. Dr. Fowler treats both children and adults. He has an active practice at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, treating both traumatic injuries and congenital hand and arm deformities. In adults, Dr. Fowler treats all conditions from the clavicle to the fingertips, including fractures, nerve compression (carpal tunnel syndrome), nerve injuries, tendon lacerations, arthritis, and rotator cuff tears. He utilizes minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic carpal tunnel release and ultrasound-guided tennis elbow release to allow a faster recovery after surgery. Dr. Fowler’s research interests include the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.
