Biography

C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with special interest in the surgery of the hip and knee. He joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2014 as Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and in 2017, was invested in The Carl L. Nelson, M.D. Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Barnes received his medical degree with honors from UAMS, where he also completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery. He completed his fellowship training in total joint replacement at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass. Dr. Barnes is widely recognized as one of the foremost joint replacement experts in the nation. He lectures nationally and internationally on total joint replacement surgery and has published well over 250 peer-reviewed articles. He is an active researcher with grant funding, holds four patents for orthopaedic surgery devices, and has designed numerous hip and knee implants. Dr. Barnes currently serves as the President and of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and previously served as the First Vice President, Second Vice President and Treasurer. Dr. Barnes has also served as President of the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, President of the Southern Orthopaedic Association, President of the Society of Arthritic Joint Surgery, and President of the Arkansas Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Barnes was honored as the Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist by the Southern Orthopaedic Association. He is also named in “Best Doctors” and “Top Doctors in Orthopaedics,” and is consistently named as one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in Arkansas. Dr. Barnes is the only orthopaedic surgeon in Arkansas who is a member of The Knee Society, a national organization committed to advancing the care of patients with knee disorders through leadership in education and research. He is also a member of The Hip Society, a national organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge relating to the hip joint. Members inducted into these prestigious societies are nationally-recognized experts in their fields.
