Biography

Dr. Scott Nelson graduated with honors from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1996. He continued his training at Loma Linda University for his five years of orthopaedic surgery residency. After completing residency he practiced as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and then went on to complete a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at UCSD/San Diego Children’s Hospital. He did additional training at the International Center for Limb Lengthening in Baltimore, MD with Drs. Herzenberg and Paley. With inspiration from his grandfather who served as a surgeon in Africa for many years, Dr. Nelson has dedicated a significant part of his career to humanitarian service. In 2005 he and his wife Marni and their two boys moved to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic where he served for 5 years as the medical director of Cure International, a children’s charity orthopedic hospital. Dr. Nelson developed a teaching program that provided advanced orthopaedic surgery services to those without resources. He has also worked extensively in the neighboring country of Haiti where he started an orthopedic program during the aftermath of the earthquake in 2010. This program is a nationally renowned center for orthopedics and continues to serve as a teaching hospital, providing services not offered at other medical institutions on the island. In 2014, Dr. Nelson was nationally recognized for his humanitarian service by receiving the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Humanitarian of the Year Award. Dr. Nelson is the founder and director of the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Center at Loma Linda University which offers the most advanced limb lengthening and reconstructive procedures in the western United States. The collaborative efforts between surgeons, ancillary staff, and the LLU physical therapy team enable the successful treatment of the most challenging cases of congenital, developmental, and post-traumatic limb length discrepancies and deformities. In 2018, Dr. Nelson and his wife Marni moved to Haiti. He still maintains his practice at Loma Linda University on a limited basis. He is the Chief of Surgery at Hôpital Adventiste in Port au Prince, where he is establishing a global campus in collaboration with Loma Linda University. This will serve as a training center for both Haitian and international students and residents and enable high-quality advanced orthopaedic services for those without resources. His experience, international reputation, and dedication strengthens Loma Linda University’s focus on whole-person care and training physicians for international medical service. With his clinical expertise in limb deformity surgery, scoliosis, and pediatric orthopaedics Loma Linda University and Haiti Adventist Hospital continues to grow as referral centers for advanced orthopaedic procedures.
