Orthopaedic Trauma

Biography

My philosophy is simple: provide the best care possible for every patient, the care that I would want for a loved one or myself. Fracture care is a blend of science and art. As such, using scientific principles and evidence-based guidelines, I treat each patient’s injury individually based on specific injury patterns and patient goals. This involves informed patient-centered discussions and input into what their goals and expectations are from treatment. This way the patient and I can come to an understanding and shared goal for their treatment strategy. Specifically, regarding fracture surgery, I do not leave the operating room with results that are not excellent. When treating fractures, I strive to restore anatomy and impart stability in a biologically friendly way to allow for early recovery and mobilization. I treat a spectrum of patients from the severely polytraumatized patients to isolated injuries so although the situational treatment factors vary the goals remain the same. I take great pride in what I do and want patients to feel and know they received the best care. Trauma can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. These patients find themselves in tough situations as these injuries are often life-alternating and unexpected. This requires patient counseling and helping patients navigate through their initial care and rehabilitation. The acuity, severity of injury, and complexity are the challenges of the field, but the ultimate career fulfillment comes from treating patients, longitudinally participating in their recovery, and seeing them return to their full lives. As a fellowship-trained orthopaedic traumatologist, Dr. Saiz is interested in and treats all fractures. He is particularly interested in pelvis and acetabulum fractures, care of polytraumatized patients, periarticular fractures, and post-traumatic reconstruction. Dr. Saiz’s research interests include both clinical and basic science studies. Clinically, he is specifically interested in surgical techniques, patient outcomes, and advancing treatment methods and protocols. Mechanistically, his lab investigates the systemic and local effects of polytrauma on fracture repair as well as the role of muscle injury on bone regeneration with the clinical goal of improving fracture healing. His research has resulted in numerous publications and national/international presentations. In addition, he serves on professional committees for the AO, AAOS, and the OTA Research Committee.
