Biography

Originally from Calgary, Canada, Dr. Gillis moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2001 to attend the University of Washington in Seattle. He attended medical school at Western University of Health Sciences – College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Southern California where he graduated in the top 10% of his class. He then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, Oregon. Following his residency, he completed a fully accredited fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity at SUNY Buffalo in New York. The robust training he received during residency and fellowship has given him the skills to manage a broad range of upper extremity issues from carpal tunnel syndrome to revision shoulder replacements. Dr. Gillis is currently board-eligible under the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His practice focuses on upper extremity care from the shoulder to fingers, including complex trauma and nerve repair, primary and revision shoulder replacement and arthroscopy, elbow and wrist arthroscopy, and microsurgery. Orthopedic surgery is more than just a career path for Dr. Gillis. He is passionate about delivering the most advanced orthopedic care to his patients while focusing on a shared decision making philosophy. Although hand and upper extremity surgery is a challenging and constantly evolving field, he understands the significant impact of exceptional care on a patient’s life. “Seeing a patient return to their daily activities without pain inspires me on a daily basis,” says Dr. Gillis. In addition to his clinical obligations, Dr. Gillis remains academically active with research publications, national and regional presentations, and active memberships in national organizations including the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He also enjoys teaching residents from the OHSU and Corvallis orthopedic surgery residency programs. Dr. Gillis has spent the majority of his training on the west coast and is excited to be settling down in Portland with his family. Outside of the office, he enjoys the many outdoor activities Portland has to offer, such as running, surfing, snowboarding, and spending time with his wife and son.
