Biography

Matthew Zapf, MD MSc is a sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and a Southern California native. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of California at Berkeley and graduate education at Georgetown University before moving on to New York Medical College for his Medical Doctorate. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles before completing an ACGME accredited sports medicine surgical fellowship at the Taos Orthopedic Institute in Taos, NM. Dr. Zapf relocated to the Coachella Valley after completing his fellowship. He specializes in the non-operative and operative management of complex sports-related, degenerative, and acute injuries to the shoulder, hip, and knee. He emphasizes understanding of patients’ injuries and will guide them through all non-operative, evidence-based, treatment options before surgical intervention is discussed. He strives to create a team-oriented, patient-centered environment to achieve his patients’ goals. “I see patients as the people they are. My goal is not just to treat a specific injury, but to optimize all aspects of their health and get them back to the activities they love.” Dr. Zapf specializes in the arthroscopic management of simple and complex sports-related injuries to the shoulder, hip, and knee. He is trained to manage complex shoulder injuries, including reconstruction of what were once believed to be irreparable rotator cuff injuries and shoulder replacement when indicated. He performs arthroscopic treatment of hip injuries and ligamentous, meniscal, and cartilage injuries of the knee. Additionally, he is trained in hip and knee replacement.
