A native of Flemington, New Jersey, Dr. Littlefield attended Ohio University on a basketball scholarship, where he was an Academic All-American selection, selected to Phi Beta Kappa, a Rush Elliott Academic Scholar, and captain of the basketball team. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1980 (as the top pre-med student and scholar-athlete of the year), he attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine on a United States Air Force (USAF) Health Professions Scholarship. He earned his M.D. in 1983 and completed his orthopedic surgery training at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. Following his internship, Dr. Littlefield entered active duty as a flight surgeon for the 335 Tactical Fighter Squadron “Chiefs” flying F-4 Phantoms at Seymour Johnson AFB Goldsboro, NC. Next, he completed his orthopedic surgery training program at the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. After being promoted to Major, he completed his residency in 1991 and was then selected for training in hand, wrist, upper extremity, and microneurovascular surgery at Duke University. Wright-Patterson AFB (WPAFB) was the next stop in 1992 following the successful completion of his fellowship at Duke. In 1995, Dr. Littlefield was promoted to Lt. Colonel and served as Chief of Orthopaedics at WPAFB Regional Medical Center until he separated from the USAF to enter private practice. While in Dayton, he held appointments as a clinical assistant professor at both Wright State University College of Medicine and the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he taught medical students and residents. He also served Wright State University, Cedarville University, Wittenberg University, and the Dayton Bombers professional hockey team as a consulting team physician. He considers it a great privilege to have trained under several of the best hand surgeons in the world (Drs. Dean Louis, David Green, Tom O’Brien, Bob Hotchkiss, Jim Strickland, Jim Urbaniak, J. Leonard Goldner, Jim Nunley, Richard Goldner, and Scott Levin) and to have been most influenced by the late Cornelius “Connie” Stover, M.D., who invented the AirCast ankle brace while revolutionizing the treatment of ankle sprains as his “hometown doc” in Flemington, NJ.
