Biography

Dr. Alberto Carli specializes in joint replacement and revision surgery involving the hip and the knee. Dr. Carli treats patients suffering from hip and knee conditions including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis (or osteonecrosis), juvenile arthritis, hip dysplasia, hip dislocation, fracture, knock knee deformity, patella clunk syndrome, patellar instability and arthritis due to metabolic or genetic disorders. He also treats patients that have had complications from previous joint replacement surgery and prosthetic joint infection of the hip & knee. Dr. Carli performs minimally invasive joint replacement surgery and is experienced in performing outpatient (same-day discharge) surgery in eligible patients. Dr. Carli customizes treatments for each patient and always covers non-surgical option. His priority is to ensure that patients understand their diagnosis, feel empowered in making the decision to proceed with surgery, and feel satisfied with their recovery and ability to return to being active. Dr. Carli completed medical school and orthopedic residency training at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. During his training, he also completed a Master’s of Science in the field of experimental surgery and received both national and international awards for research on how the bone attaches to orthopedic implants. Dr. Carli then went on to complete two prestigious fellowships in joint replacement surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. After which he was awarded the Maurice Muller Fellowship, travelling to Europe for six months to work with and learn from leaders in joint replacement surgery and recovery. Upon returning to North America, Dr. Carli was recruited as an Assistant Professor at the Ottawa Hospital in Canada, led a complex joint replacement surgery service and was recognized by his patients three times for outstanding, empathic care. Dr. Carli has recently joined the staff at the Hospital for Special Surgery to continue to provide outstanding clinical care and high quality research. Dr. Carli is a surgeon-scientist, dedicating his non-clinical time to performing scientific research based on joint replacement design and preventing infections. He has published over thirty papers and is a reviewer for seven medical journals. Dr. Carli lectures to medical students and orthopedic residents, and has been recognized for his teaching skills throughout his career.
