Biography

Dr. Hartwell is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan and specializes in sports medicine and surgery of the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow. Dr. Hartwell graduated from Hope College in Holland, MI, and then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Michigan. During medical school, he completed a one-year clinical research fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. After medical school, he then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency training at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL followed by a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Hartwell specializes in hip preservation/hip arthroscopy and the treatment of non-arthritic hip conditions, including femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears, hip abductor tears, and proximal hamstring injuries. His practice also includes the management of all sports injuries of the shoulder (instability, rotator cuff tears), knee (ACL tears and ligamentous injuries, meniscus tears, cartilage injuries), and elbow (distal biceps tears).
