Regardless of the period of immobilization, a specific exercise program, or immobilization/activity restriction, recurrence rates remain high. The only consistent predictor of recurrence has been the age of the patient, reflecting the activity demands of the patient.

In young patients (<25 years old), recurrence rates have ranged from 60-94%. Family history confers a 34% risk of recurrence, while dislocation in the contralateral shoulder is seen in 25% of recurrently unstable patients according to one study in JBJS (Hovelius et al, 2008). No difference in dominant and non-dominant extremities was noted.
