The patient should be evaluated for any correctable metabolic or endocrine abnormality that may exist prior to any surgical intervention. Infection in the absence of previous surgery is very unlikely. There are no radiographic findings suggestive of a malignancy; therefore, MRI and PET scans are not indicated. Thermal imaging is not in use in orthopaedics.
