The superior and inferior gluteal arteries form a vascular network posterior to the hip. Whereas both arteries provide blood supply to the acetabulum, the inferior gluteal artery frequently anastomoses directly into the deep branch of the medial femoral circumflex artery and in a minority of patients has been shown to be the dominant blood supply into the femoral head.
