Osteoid osteoma is a round or oval, well-circumscribed lesion with a radiolucent nidus. A small area of calcification may be present within the center of the nidus. The radiolucent nidus is surrounded by a thick rim of sclerotic bone. These diagnostic features are frequently better seen on CT. An increase in cyclooxygenase activity has been demonstrated within osteoid osteomas, which may explain why aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs classically relieve the pain associated with these lesions.
