Approximately one half of patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) have the pauciarticular form, which by definition includes only patients with fewer than five joints involved. The peak period of onset is between the ages of 2 and 4 years, with half of the affected children coming to medical attention before age 4 years. The knee is most often affected, with the ankle-subtalar and elbow joints next in frequency. The average duration of the disease is 2 years and 9 months, with half the cases lasting less than 2 years.
