If a patient is toe-touch or non-weightbearing on one lower extremity then 2 axillary crutches are required for support during ambulation. Level 5 evidence by Faruqui et al discuss that a single forearm (Lofstrand) crutch can bear almost half of a person's body weight. Axillary crutches permit up to 80% of weight bearing of the body for a single crutch and up to 100% of weight bearing of the body for two crutches in swing-through gaits. A single cane can support approximately one quarter of a person’s body weight.
