Risk factors for wound complications following Achilles tendon repair include tobacco abuse, steroid use, female gender, and diabetes mellitus.

Bruggeman et al anlayzed risk factors for wound complications after Achilles tendon repair. They found that tobacco use, steroid use, and female sex were significant risk factors for development of wound complications. Over 40% of those patients who had one or more of the following risk factors: diabetes, tobacco use, or steroid use had a complication, compared with 6% for those without risk factors present.
