A 33-year-old right-hand dominant male guitarist presents to your office with difficulty flexing the DIP joint of his right ring finger. He has just returned from a six-month mission trip abroad and recalls an injury at the beginning of his trip while playing soccer where the DIP was forcefully extended. On examination, he is able to flex the MCP and PIP joints of his ring finger when making a fist, but his DIP joint remains extended. There is a prominent lump palpated proximal to the MCP joint of his ring finger. You are able to passively range the DIP joint into 55º of flexion and full extension and the MCP/PIP joints have a full range of motion. Given this patient's injury and occupation, what is the best treatment strategy?
