A 17-year-old male high school football player takes a hit directly to the thigh during a game. He is unable to return to the game and is taken to the ED, where radiographs are negative for fracture. Orthopedics is asked to evaluate the patient in the ED. On examination the thigh is swollen and firm with overlying ecchymosis. There is point tenderness to palpation over the anterior thigh, but the patient is relatively comfortable at rest. He can perform a straight leg raise, although with difficulty and pain. Sensation is intact to the lower extremity and the leg is well perfused with brisk capillary refill. What is the next best step in management of this patient's most likely injury?
