In a young patient, meniscal repair is preferred over meniscectomy when possible. The rates of healing are improved with tears that are closer to the meniscocapsular junction and corresponding blood supply. This means that smaller rim width tears have the better healing potential. The time from injury to surgery, medial versus lateral meniscal tears, and the length of the tear have not been shown to consistently effect meniscal healing. The reference by DeHaven et al is a review of meniscal repair, including treatment options and basic science of repair. The reference by Bach et al is a retrospective review of meniscal repair failures. They noted a 12% failure rate, with patients who were older (>30 years old) at the time of meniscal repair failing significantly later than those patients who were younger at the time of repair. In addition, they noted that larger tears failed earlier than smaller tears.
