Glucagon is the hormone of fasting or starvation. In contrast to insulin, which promotes storage of nutrients when they are abundant, glucagon promotes mobilization and utilization of stored nutrients to maintain the blood glucose concentration in the fasting state; thereby it is catabolic to muscle.
