Dr. Stephen M. Howell is a retired board-certified orthopedic surgeon known for pioneering the kinematic alignment technique in total knee replacement. He practiced in Sacramento and Lodi, California, until 2025, with over three decades of experience in total knee replacement, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and meniscal surgery. Dr. Howell has trained physicians globally and published more than 140 scientific articles advancing the understanding and treatment of knee-related conditions. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Davis, and is a retired military professional who served during Operation Desert Storm. In retirement, he enjoys fly-fishing, golf, walking, swimming, and cycling.
