Biography

Todd Swenning, MD, a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, is the Medical Director and Director of Orthopedic Trauma of the Institute of Clinical Orthopedics and Neurosciences. He joined ICON in April 2015 and also has served as Medical Director since January 2016. Dr. Swenning has nearly 20 years of experience in orthopedic surgery. Prior to coming to ICON, he served as Director of Orthopedic Trauma at Saint Francis Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma for approximately 10 years. At ICON, Dr. Swenning focuses on emergent, orthopedic trauma cases at Desert Regional Medical Center’s Level II Trauma Center, specializing in management of fractures, mangled extremities, as well as pelvic and acetabular (hip socket) fractures. He also sees patients at the ICON clinic with general orthopedic concerns. A native of South Dakota, Dr. Swenning earned his Medical Degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota. He served his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, Kansas and a residency in pediatric orthopedic surgery at the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri where he was named Chief Resident of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery. Returning to the University of Kansas School of Medicine, he completed an additional residency in orthopedics and was selected as Chief Resident of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Swenning also has completed two fellowships – a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, Texas and a fellowship in trauma surgery at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Dr. Swenning is a fellow of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the Orthopedic Trauma Association and a member of the Health Policy Committee for the Orthopedic Trauma Association. Additionally, he has received several research awards and is the recipient of several orthopedic grants and scholarships.
