This description may apply to the instability pattern after posterior lateral corner injuries. The key to this terminology is that knee dislocations and subluxations are classified based on the postion of the tibial plateau relative to the femur. For example, a positive Lachman test may also be described as anterior instability with the tibia subluxated anterior to the femur.

The Jung article showed that the dial test was more clearly positive when the posterior tibial sag is reduced- which is why it is recommended to perform this test in the prone position.
