Iontophoresis is the use of an electrical current to drive charged molecules of medicine through the skin to the deeper tissues (Illustration A). This technique has been used with a variety of medications including steroids, local anesthetics, salicylates, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. When ultrasound, rather than electrical current, is used to deliver medicine it is called phonophoresis. The article by Chapman et al is a review of different physical therapy modalities. These include transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (answer 1), ultrasound (answer 3), laser treatments (answer 4), and magnet therapy (answer 5).
