Biography

After growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, and Annapolis, MD, Dr. Peter G. Mangone graduated magna cum laude from Davidson College in Davidson, NC, where he was a varsity letterman in baseball as well as a premed student. He attended and graduated cum laude from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, in 1989. He completed his internship and his orthopedic residency at Emory Affiliated Hospitals and then went on to complete his fellowship in orthopedic foot and ankle surgery at the Center For Orthopaedic Care in Cincinnati, Ohio with Dr. G. James Sammarco. Dr, Mangone joined UPMC as the Chief of Foot and Ankle Division in August 2024. Prior to accepting this new role, Dr. Mangone spent 25 years in a successful private practice with EmergeOrtho: Blue Ridge Region in Asheville, NC. While in North Carolina, he served as the the co-director of the EmergeOrtho: Blue Ridge Region Foot and Ankle Center. At this point in his career, Dr. Mangone chose to join the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopedic Surgery to embark on a new phase in his career teaching the next generation of orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Mangone has always been an active participant in the orthopedic landscape. He has in the AOFAS and AANA as well as local and regional medical societies throughout his career. In his private practice, he was member of the executive physician team for over 15 years, specializing in the marketing of the practice in the Western North Carolina area. He served as a member of the executive board for 2 different local surgery centers at over the last 10 years well as being the Chief of Surgery at Advent Health Hendersonville Hospital for 2023-2024. He has served as the Practice Management committee chair for the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). In 2019, he was the president of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Society. He has served as a volunteer faculty member at the annual AANA Masters in Foot and Ankle arthroscopy course for the many years as well as a volunteer faculty member for AOFAS courses for both practing orthopedci surgeons as well as orthopedic residents in training. He is a founding member of the Ankle Instability Group, an international group of twenty orthopaedic surgeons who have devoted themselves to advancing the diagnosis, classification, and surgical treatment of ankle instability through study and publication. He is also the co-inventor of the ArthroBrostrom technique for arthroscopic lateral ankle ligament instability. He has spoken and taught numerous times both nationally and internationally about the ArthroBrostrom technique, and he is regarded as an international expert in arthroscopic ankle ligament repair and reconstruction. He is also well known internationally as an expert in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery. In addition to being on the forefront of minimally invasive and arthroscopic foot and ankle surgery, Dr. Mangone was the first orthopedic surgeon in Western North Carolina to perform "modern" total ankle replacement surgery in 2002. To date, he has performed more than 450 total ankle replacements in his career. Dr. Mangone is an avid golfer. He also enjoys birdwatching, experiecing different cultures, and learning about history and political science. Last but not least, he enjoys spending time with his wife and grown children.
