Biography

Dr. Wright’s research interests are in the design of orthopedic devices with an emphasis on the biomechanical performance of total joint replacements. Special areas of interest are the mechanics of the bone-implant system and wear and tribocorrosion of bearing surfaces and modular connections. He applies implant retrieval analysis integrated with stress analyses and laboratory experiments in these efforts. Other areas of interest include applying his expertise in joint mechanics to integrated experimental-computational approaches aimed at understanding joint stability including collaboration on a novel, noninvasive mouse model for studying the onset and progression of osteoarthritis. Dr. Wright joined the Hospital for Special Surgery in 1976 and the Cornell University Medical College in 1978. He is a recipient of honors for excellence in research from the Hip Society and the Knee Society and earned a Kappa Delta Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. A past Whitaker Fellow and a past recipient of a Research Career Development Award from NIH, Dr. Wright served as president of the Orthopaedic Research Society in 1992. He is a former consulting editor for research of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and was co-editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research from 1996 to 2014. Dr. Wright received a Director's Special Citation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for his work on a forum of academic, industry and agency representatives striving to improve the regulatory process for orthopedic devices. In 2013, he was awarded the Alfred Shands Award from the Orthopedic Research Society in recognition of a professional lifetime of outstanding contributions to orthopedic research.
