Biography

Dr. Matthew Provencher is one of the nation’s leading orthopedic surgeons specializing in the surgical treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to the knee and shoulder. Dr. Provencher practices at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, and conducts research as a Principal Investigator at the renowned Steadman Philippon Research Institute aimed at innovation and improvement in patient care in the field of orthopedic sports medicine. He previously served as the Chief of Sports Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School, and was the Head Team Physician and Medical Director of the New England Patriots, and Assistant Team Physician for the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. He also currently serves as Professor of Surgery & Orthopedics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and is the Department Head of Navy Orthopedics – San Diego Reserve. Dr. Provencher has special expertise in shoulder arthroscopy, shoulder stabilization, rotator cuff repair, biceps and SLAP disorders including tenodesis, shoulder arthritis and shoulder replacements, joint restoration with biologics and cartilage, knee arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruction, osteotomies, and cartilage restoration. Dr. Provencher graduated with highest honors from the United States Naval Academy, where he was appointed the Deputy Brigade Commander, graduated with highest honors, was Secretary of the Navy Distinguished Graduate, and was a First-Team All-American rower. He earned his medical degree with honors at Dartmouth Medical School and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Provencher completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and his orthopedic shoulder knee and sports surgery fellowship at Rush University in Chicago. A prolific researcher, he has received numerous academic and research awards, including the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Science Award, the ISAKOS Richard Caspari Award and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Aircast Research Award. He was also selected for several prestigious traveling fellowships, including the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) John Fahey North American Traveling Fellowship, the American-British-Canadian (ABC) Fellowship and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Traveling Fellowship. In addition, Dr. Provencher has received several peer-reviewed research grants totaling over $1.5M to study topics such as shoulder instability, rotator cuff injuries and ACL tears from funding agencies including, OREF, PRORP and The Departments of the Army and Navy. Dr. Provencher served as an orthopedic surgeon at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and was Director of the Sports Medicine and Surgery Program. As Consultant Orthopedic Team Physician for the Navy Seal Teams 1, 3, 5 and 7, he was also instrumental in setting up the Special Forces Tactical Athlete Program – a comprehensive wellness, injury prevention and rehabilitation program for Naval Special Forces. In addition to his orthopedic duties, Dr. Provencher performed extensive Humanitarian and Disaster Relief work. In this capacity, he served as the Director for Surgical Services for three years on the USNS Mercy and was the surgical leader during Pacific Partnership 2012 – the largest Humanitarian and Civic Action in the Asia-Pacific region focused on building stronger relationships and building disaster response capabilities with partner nations. In this capacity, he led a 500-member medical-surgical team on a five country Disaster Relief training mission in the Asia Pacific region. In recognition of Dr. Provencher’s academic achievements in the realm of sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, he was elected into the prestigious Herodicus Society, which identifies excellence in orthopedic sports surgery. He was also nominated to The Board of Directors for the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM). He serves on numerous national and international committees and was the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) 2014 Program Director and the Co-Director of the San Diego Shoulder Institute Annual Meeting. He is active in publishing leadership as the Assistant Editor-in-Chief of Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery. He currently serves as the Research Chairman for AOSSM; Education Committee Chairman for AANA; and is the Exhibits Chair on the Annual Meeting Committee for AAOS. Dr. Provencher is an active member of Arthroscopy Association of AANA, AOSSM, ISAKOS, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS). He was recently named one of the Top 28 Shoulder Surgeons in the United States and also one of the Top 28 Knee Surgeons in the United States by Orthopedics Today. He is also recognized by Becker’s Orthopedics as “One of 59 Great Orthopedic Surgeons”. His research includes over 200 peer-reviewed publications and articles, 148 chapters, and he has authored 5 textbooks.
