Dr. Kassam has extensive experience in complex shoulder and elbow surgery, sports injuries and traumatic orthopedic reconstruction. He is Board Certified by both the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. After completing his residency at the University of Toronto, he received sub-specialty training at both Yale University and the Bone and Joint Institute. There, he mastered minimally invasive techniques in shoulder and elbow joint replacement as well as advanced arthroscopy and non-operative treatments. He is currently an upper extremity specialist with the Sutter North Medical Group and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at California Northstate University where is he is helping to develop innovative educational models and undergraduate interest in Orthopedics. ?Believing in evidence-based choices for his patients and improving outcomes in modern orthopedics, Dr. Kassam has published numerous original scientific research articles, technique guides, instructional videos and has presented his work on both the national and international stage. He is the Program Chair for the annual Northern California Shoulder and Elbow Course and sits on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty (JSEA). He peer-reviews for The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES), Shoulder & Elbow (S & E) and Arthroscopy. Dr. Kassam is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Canadian Orthopedic Association as well as the highly selective American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) . He attends the annual invited Mayo Clinic "Teach the Teachers" elbow group and is an invited member of the international ASES Massive Rotator Cuff Tear Research Initiative (MERIT). ?His involvement in these forums has given him extensive experience in the latest technologies and designs in shoulder and elbow surgery such as total and reverse shoulder replacement, including stemless bone-sparing designs as well as cutting edge arthroscopic procedures such as rotator cuff patch augmentation and arthroscopic treatment of sports injuries. He is also one of the few physicians in Northern California who performs complex procedures including revision shoulder and elbow surgery, muscle transfer operations, superior capsule reconstruction and advanced arthroscopic implantation of both amniotic cell and adult human tissue grafts. An avid sportsman himself, and having competed internationally as a ranked middleweight boxer, Dr. Kassam is uniquely situated to understand the needs of the competitive athlete and the particular difficulties they can encounter. He has significant expertise in treating shoulder and elbow instability, labral tears, rotator cuff pathology as well as tendonitis of the shoulder and elbow. He is currently a Ringside Physician for USA Boxing and his volunteer community outreach includes being Head Team Physician for the Marysville Unified School District as well as Yuba Community College. He has previously served as a Team Physician for Yale Varsity Athletics as well as the CT State Champions Darien HS Football team.
