The Ober test is positive with contracture of the tensor fascia lata or iliotibial band which limits adduction of the hip while in an extended position. The tensor fascia lata flexes and abducts the hip so a contracture would limit both extension and adduction.

Gautam designed a new exam maneuver that quantifies the contracture by stabilizing the pelvis and maintain hip extension using a prone position.

Illustration A demonstates how to perform an Ober test. Illustration V shows a video of the Ober test.
