PEAK Skillmaster

A SURGICAL SKILLS SELF-IMPROVEMENT TRACKING PLATFORM
WITH 1500+ LEARNING MODULES

  • 1500 Skill modules covering 150+ essential orthopaedic procedures.

  • Each skill module is broken down into a task check list of rich educational activities and content to guide skill preparation.

  • Self-mastery tracking allows surgeons to self-teach surgical skills, and keep track of their own progress.

  • Integration with our PASS assessment platform optimizes resident training by allowing faculty to focus on teaching skills that residents are properly prepared for, within an appropriate level of complexity.

ACCELERATING SURGICAL SKILLS AQUISITION BY KEEPING
SURGEONS ON THE LEARNING CURVE "SWEET SPOT"
  • The "sweet spot" is a surgical skill that is SLIGHTLY more challenging than what a surgeon has mastered, yet still within their range of capability.

  • All of our procedures are broken into specific skills and a complexity level is assigned that is consistent with the ACGME Orthopaedic Milestones.

  • In our system "capable" is defined as when a surgeon completes all prerequisite skills and educational tasks in the skill module.

  • Transparency allows the faculty to focus their teaching efforts on the "sweet zone" - the skill complexity is matched to the capability of the resident

EACH SKILL MODULE IS BROKEN INTO A TASK LIST OF EDUCATION ACTIVITIES TO PREPARE SURGEONS

Reading all the steps gives you a high level overview and understanding of the skill before you dive into the OR. Residents, be sure to determine educational objectives with your attending faculty before evaluation.

  • Make sure to take a look at the skills under the headers when reading your step
  • Click on the skill to expand/collapse it

  • Each procedure has on average 8 steps

  •  Expanding allows you to view videos for each step (more videos coming soon)

Technique guide videos will give you a step by step process of what to do in the OR,  from preoperative plan/room preparation all the way to postoperative care. More videos will be added to the technique guide in 2017, videos are currently in beta.

NOTICE - VIDEO SELECTION IS LIMITED. MORE VIDEOS WILL BE RELEASED EACH MONTH

  • We are excited to announce step-by-step videos for each skill in the procedure.

  • We are working with some of the best medical centers around the country to provide accurate, easy to watch videos to complement your technique mastery.

  • Please look forward to more videos coming soon.

Our collection of articles helps you dive into procedure specifics (what type of hardware to use, what type of cut to make depending on the case) and allow you to learn from experts in the field. Complement your skill mastery while impressing your attending with evidence knowledge.

  • Orthobullets has over 5,000 articles (and growing) to give you technical expertise during your procedure

  • We also have access to hundreds of free PDFs

  •  Our collaborative evidence articles also allow you to glean information from other physicians to make the best possible decision when in the OR

Use self mastery tracking technology to rate your progress through skills and procedures. Using this system will reinforce your learning and highlight the areas you should focus on. Use the key below to keep track of your progress mastering each step.

  •  Use this key to keep track of your progress mastering each step
  • Rate your progress as you work through levels of experience with particular skill in the OR
  • Only rate yourself at 100% if you are able to accomplish the skill on your own and unassisted

Our technique guide is designed to complent our PASS Evaluation Platform. Our goal is to improve the efficiency of faculty teaching and resident learning in the OR. We believe the secret to this is to match the capability of the resident with the complexity of the skill. If this is done properly, the faculty will only focus their limited, high-quality time on skills that fall in the sweet spot for the resident - those skills that are slightly more difficulty than any he has done, yet is within range so the patient remains safe.

The magic of the Technique Guide and Skillmaster, is that the self learning (task tracker) and self-mastery can be used as a measure of the resident's capabilty. This way, the faculty and the resident can can be on the same page, and the faculty can be assured the resident has completed all the pre-requisite learning materials and self-improvemnt to engage in the faculty MSE.

PASS Technique Guide and Skillmaster Cycle

  • Try to submit your skill 12-24 hours before entering the OR

  • Deciding on the educational objectives in advance gives you the opportunity to read thoroughly on one specific skill

  • Faculty will be aware of your preparation and will be confident handing over the knife
