Children should ambulate independently at about 1 year of age and although this age may vary, if not ambulating by 18 months, an underlying neurologic or developmental condition should be considered. Clubfoot does not significantly delay ambulation nor does hip dysplasia or limb-length inequality, although this is a common misconception and reason for referral. Torsional deformities, such as in-toeing, are common and do not alter the age at which a child will ambulate.
